Can you give us the founding story of your company?

Oak Point Associates was founded in 1979 by Robert Tillotson. As a recent graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Rob’s dream and goal was to start his own company so his visions and designs could come to fruition.  The firm began small, working with the federal government and private clients on renovations and small projects, then gradually grew its portfolio to include new buildings.  The firm began its involvement with school design in the early 2000’s and it is now one of its predominant markets.  Rob enjoys school design work because of its potential to create positive community impacts. The company’s name was derived from a remote location in Down East Maine called Oak Point, where Rob has an ancestral home and many fond memories.

We enjoy school design for its potential to make a positive impact on the lives of young learners.  The existing school is located in close proximity to our Portsmouth office and we saw this project as a wonderful opportunity to partner with such a great organization within our local community.  The school’s outstanding reputation and rich history within Portsmouth made this a very attractive project to be a part of and we are particularly pleased to be working with the Hope for Tomorrow Foundation and school leadership to help realize a state-of-the-art Catholic school facility for the 21st century.

How do you like working on Saint Patrick Academy?

As one of the founding partners in Altus, prior to starting the company in 1995, I worked for a local engineering firm that performed civil engineering service to develop retail shopping centers throughout New England.  Although the firm provided quality services, working on a regional basis was unfulfilling.  My personal goal for the firm back in March of 1995 which remains accurate today is to provide attentitive civil engineering services for public and private development projects in my community.  It gives us pleasure to work for the members of our community, to be able see my clients and the regulators who we face in the supermarket, the streets or with my family, and to look them in the face knowing that we looked out for their best interested and provided them with the services that they needed at a fair price.  Working for Jim Broom and the Saint Patrick’s family is just another extension of what we do every day.

With that said, seeing Jim’s vision come to fruition and seeing the turnout of so many of the Saint Patrick’s family at the Planning Board meetings and at the ground breaking re-energized my belief in our mission.

At ground breaking, and being an outsider to the Saint Patrick’s community, I realized that I was not really an outsider.  I may be a member of the Jewish faith but the groundbreaking reminded me of community.  Many friends, clients, and children who I have coached in youth sports were there and as expected they welcomed me with open arms.  In my 30 plus years of practicing civil engineering, I have never experienced as much joy and satisfaction as the Saint Patrick Academy Groundbreaking.
